Sant Jordi and the Dragon of Park Güell

Sant Jordi and the Dragon of Park Güell

Legend tells of a rose bush that sprouted from the dragon who was taken down by Sant Jordi. The knight cut off the most beautiful rose and offered it to the princess. To honor this feat, it is a tradition in Catalonia to gift books and roses every 23rd of April. Happy Sant Jordi’s day!

Park Güell invites pupils from local schools, in the three primary education cycles (initial, intermediate and upper) to take part in the eighth edition of the bookmark competition.

The goal is for children who live and attend school in the area around Park Güell to participate in an activity that will encourage creativity and reading, while at the same time showcasing the park as a cultural setting in its own right.

The competition theme is focused on the celebration of World Book Day and Sant Jordi’s Day.

The dragon or salamander, known as ‘El Drac’ in Catalan, is Park Güell’s most emblematic icon, and while it is true that there is no single interpretation of this figure, it certainly provides ample scope for the imagination. That’s why – since other symbols and myths can be found on the monumental stairway – there are those who believe that Gaudí wished to represent the legend of Sant Jordi (St George).

With this competition, we want to encourage pupils to relate the legend of Sant Jordi and the dragon to Park Güell, using their imagination and artistic skills.

The activity is aimed at primary school pupils from the schools near Park Güell: Baldiri Reixac, Escola Montseny, Turó del Cargol, Reina Elisenda Virolai and Jesuïtes Gràcia (Col·legi Kostka).
